Environment Agency Compliance Audit – the results are in...

On the 12th September 2023 the Environment Agency (EA) made an unscheduled visit to our Epping facility to conduct an unannounced site inspection.

Our Epping site is our main End of Life (ELV) de-pollution facility taking vehicles of all shapes and sizes (vans, cars etc) to have their engine, transmission (gearbox, steering) as well as other hazardous chemicals and materials removed which might cause harm to the environment such as air conditioning refrigerants and coolants. ELVs are considered to be hazardous due to the nature of the materials that they contain and as such de-pollution facilities can sometimes by viewed as potentially high-risk sites by the enforcement bodies that regulate them.

The EA officers were shown around the site and into the de-pollution facility by the Epping Site Manager Tim Bennett, examining processes and procedures TWM have in place to prevent the activities conducted on site harming the local environment.

Throughout their visit the EA officers were shown activities undertaken at the facility and copies of all of TWMs operating and environmental licences and permits.

On Monday 25th September we received the official EPR Compliance Assessment Report (CAR). Despite the visit being unannounced the EA Officers awarded the site with a completely clean bill of health with the CAR observations highlighting the high environmental performance undertaken at Epping including well maintained fuel and chemical storage areas with secondary containments labelled correctly and numerous emergency spill kits located close to storage areas in the unlikely event of a spill occurring.

The findings also concluded that the drainage tank was well maintained and operating accordingly and that the concrete impermeable surface which is in place across the whole site contained no damage to its integrity and operability.

In summary the EA officers found no evidence of pollution to the local environment or the nearby watercourse.

If you have a vehicle that has come to the end of its life and require it to be recovered to the highest possible standard and in accordance with all the relevant environmental regulations and statutes then please get in touch.
