Celebrating a Year of the Shear!

In 2023, TotalWM made a huge financial investment of £3m, to reduce our use of gas oil and diesel with the purchase of a fully electric 1400T shear which arrived on our Basildon site in Spring last year.

Since its installation, TotalWM are proud to have saved over 150,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

It is one of the first fully automated electric shears operating in the UK and is capable of processing anything up to 500 tonnes a day of every grade of ferrous and non-ferrous materials.

What sets this machine apart is its versatility in handling various material shapes and sizes, including oversized pieces that were previously challenging to manage on-site. The shear’s design also allows for precise cutting of scrap metal which can improve the quality of the end product and minimise waste.

The installation of this mighty machine was a monumental task too! Check out the following timelapse videos (each around 25 seconds long) to see the complexity and scale of this project expertly managed by our Engineering and Maintenance Team at TotalWM.
